Kurtz, the author of Sanatoga&#8217;s first history.\u00a0 Digging matches were held each evening, after the day&#8217;s work was done, to excavate for the cellar.\u00a0 The stones, bricks, sand, and lime used in erecting the chapel were donated and brought to the site by volunteers.\u00a0 In order to raise money for the construction, lectures, plays, and musical programs were planned.\u00a0 Finally, on May 10, 1891, the doors of the Chapel were opened and their dream realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">It is that same determination that drives the Society today to continue to restore and maintain the Chapel as a public museum.\u00a0 After obtaining the deed in March 1991, meetings of the Society were resumed in July.\u00a0 Since that time, the restoration of the chapel<\/span> <span style=\"color: #993300;\">has been the lone goal of our fund raising efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5073\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/LgeWarMemorial2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5073 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/LgeWarMemorial2017-1024x485.jpg\" alt=\"Veterans War Memorial\" width=\"474\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/LgeWarMemorial2017-1024x485.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/LgeWarMemorial2017-300x142.jpg 300w, http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/LgeWarMemorial2017.jpg 1579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VETERANS WAR MEMORIAL<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Since we began, the replacement of the exterior chimney, updating of\u00a0the electrical service, painting of exterior windows, and clean-up of the grounds have been completed.\u00a0 Memorial shrubs and gardens have been planted on the grounds.\u00a0 Structurally, the building is in good condition.\u00a0 We have\u00a0also replaced the roof, put in a new heating system,\u00a0and\u00a0 painted the interior.\u00a0\u00a0We have had both the bell tower and the war memorial refurbished.\u00a0 We have had\u00a0the east, west, and back walls re-pointed, and have now\u00a0 finished getting the front wall done.\u00a0 We\u00a0 had a fire alarm\u00a0and security system installed, and we have constructed\u00a0a\u00a0replica of a trolley (shown below)\u00a0to be used for storage and various other functions on the grounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Fund raising projects have included an annual yard sale, strawberry festival, raffles, bake sales,<a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/index.php\/merchandise-2\/\"> note cards<\/a>, a <a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/index.php\/merchandise-2\/\">Lower Pottsgrove history book<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>and small wooden replicas of the chapel.\u00a0 We also have<a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/lowerpottsgrovehistoricalsociety.org\/site\/index.php\/merchandise-2\/\"> blue and white coverlets<\/a> with scenes depicting\u00a0well-known landmarks in the Lower Pottsgrove area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">As\u00a0you drive through our township, take a closer look.\u00a0 Did you know that:\u00a0 The Lenni Lenape Indians were the first residents in this area; there were once 5 one-room school houses (all of which are still standing); George Washington had an encampment in our hills; the rocks in Ringing Rocks Park really ring; Sanatoga was once called Crooked Hill;
